PDF tools are everywhere, and that is the problem
Search for any PDF task and you will find a dozen sites promising to do it free. Most share the same hidden cost: your file is the product. It gets uploaded, processed on a remote server, and returned to you — passing through infrastructure you don’t control on the way.
The risks people don’t notice
- Data residency: you rarely know which country the file is processed in.
- Retention: “deleted after processing” is a promise, not something you can verify.
- Account creep: some sites nudge you to sign up, trading your email for the “free” service.
- Malvertising: ad-heavy converter pages are a common malware vector.
A different architecture
OffBase Tools flips the model. There is no server in the path. Compress PDF rewrites the document with compressed object streams in your browser; PDF to JPG renders pages locally with PDF.js; Merge PDF copies pages on your device. The “cloud” is optional and unused.
Why this is better for everyday work
Privacy is the obvious win, but there is a practical one too: no upload means no waiting on a slow connection for a 50 MB file, and no file-size ceiling imposed by a server. You are limited only by your own device, and the result is ready the instant processing finishes.
FAQ
Are local tools slower? For typical documents they are faster, because there is no network round-trip.
Can I use them on my phone? Yes — modern mobile browsers support the same Canvas and PDF.js APIs used on desktop.
